I was standing out of his field...

I met an African American Jewish man at the bus stop this morning. I was standing out of his field of vision for a while until my feet starting tiring and so I decided to sit near him with an empty seat between us. He looked over at me with intrigued eyes as if we had just been discussing the fundamentals of Burmese politics and I had just said something he didn’t expect. After a few seconds I hesitantly said hello, and he nodded and looked down at his phone. It was 8:02 then. He raised his head again to look at me and asked if I were Muslim, to which I smiled slightly and replied yes. He nodded again and turned on some old school hip hop song. He looked to be in his early 40’s with a clean shaved head and face. Expecting him to say something else, I waited until he turned his face towards me and looked at my clothes. I was sitting with my feet flat on the ground, my back straight and relaxed, and my hands folded resting on the bag in my lap. “Have you always been wrapped like that?” He had a small smile on his lips and his tone wasn’t aggressive, indicating he was purely curious. I smiled in turn and told him I’ve been covered since the third grade but that it was my choice. He looked impressed by this statement and looked away, “That’s some heavy stuff.” I smiled, shrugged, and looked the other way to see if the bus was coming. It wasn’t and so I turned back to him. “You know what, I’m gonna respect you with this.” And he turned his music off for which I thanked him. That was when he told me he was Jewish, and it was my turn to be surprised because it’s not everyday I meet an African American Jew. I nodded with eye brows raised in the manner people do when they learn new information. He said, “Yeah, I’m really into the faith. I read Hebrew fluently, and I’m always reading it. Yeah, I’m down for sure.” I nodded again, listening to him politely. “A lot of my friends are Muslim, you know.” I asked him what he thought about that. “Oh? I think about it, yeah. I think about it a lot. My brothers and sisters, too, some of them. They’re into the faith.” He asked for my age and I told him I’m seventeen. “Seventeen? Really? Seventeen. That’s really good. That’s really good.” I laughed and asked him why he thought so. He looked over and around the bus stop at the different women and girls. “These women, I mean, I dunno. How do you walk around like that? Orange hair, yellow hair.” He gestured to a woman wearing a tight-fitting maxi dress that revealed her back and accentuated her curves, and shook his head in disapproval. A freshman who went to my school looked over at him, with an annoyed expression. I was looking at the woman he gestured to, walking away from our direction, and told him that you can’t blame them or hold them accountable because it’s simply the way they grew up. “No, no, I’m not judging, I’m not judging. I don’t judge.” It didn’t seem that way to me, but I nodded anyways. “You just carry yourself like a lady, that’s all.” I didn’t know whether to be flattered or irritated. I went quiet and a while later he asked for my name and told him it was Sahar. He cocked his ear towards me, and I repeated it again and spelled it out for him and he sounded it out. I nodded, wondering where in the world this bus. “My name is Moshe, meaning Moses in Hebrew.” It was pronounced moe-shay. I told him Moses in Arabic was Musa. “Oh, I know, I know. My friends tell me all about that. They teach me.” I was actually internally roaring of joy at that. I said I was really proud of his friends and he smiled and nodded. I was about to ask him if he ever thought about converting, but the bus just pulled up. Ten minutes later he was getting off at a stop and he tapped my shoulder and held out his hand. “it was nice meeting you.” I panicked and shook his hand even though I wanted to tell him to tell him I’m not supposed to. But he stepped off the bus and my chance went along with him; I regretted shaking his hand and said astaghfirullah about 100 times. I kept thinking about Boonaa’s Body Language spoken word.

“How many times have you shook hands with the opposite gender
For business or for pleasure, even though you know better
You still found a way to justify such a gesture
Just cause you wanted people to think you were peaceful
You joined them in evil, the outcome was lethal
Better to be struck in the head with an iron needle
Be shy from your Lord, not shy from the people.”

InshaAllah khair. Next time I’ll gather my wits about me to say something, inshaAllah.

Photo

Photo

touba:
